Homes in summertime, with windows open and the whole house fan running, may have different overall levels than in wintertime when we batten down the hatches. Keep in mind that radon levels in a house or building may change with the season. These are generally considered to be less reliable than continuous radon monitors, and may be better suited for long-term measuring. There are also passive devices available (inluding charcoal canisters, alpha-track detectors, and charcoal liquid scintillation devices) that are exposed to the air in a home or building for a specific amount of time and are then sent to a laboratory for analysis. These machines can observe spikes or dips in the radon level over a period of time (minimum of 48 hours), and typically include a device that reports if the machine has been removed or tampered with. Indoor air quality professionals measure radon levels with a continuous radon monitor.
